A career accelerator physicist commencing 40 years ago with early work on the original NINA 5 GeV electron synchrotron at Daresbury, he shifted subsequently to the design, construction, and commissioning of advanced light sources, including the SRS and DIAMOND national facilities (1974–2003) in the UK. He has contributed to development of accelerator driven photon sources, including a leading role in the HELIOS compact superconducting source commercially marketed, and has been a consultant to several major European projects. He was appointed Director of the Accelerator Science and Technology Centre (ASTeC) in 2003 with broad responsibilities for the UK accelerator R&D programs both at Daresbury and Rutherford Appleton laboratories. In 2003 he became a founding member of the pioneering Cockcroft Institute for accelerator research in close collaboration with several universities (Lancaster, Liverpool, and Manchester). He was Associate Editor of Physical Review Special Topics - Accelerators and Beams from 2002 to 2005 and has been on the Editorial Board since then. |
